Roy F. Baumeister: Self-Control, Belonging, and the Questions of Human Life

Roy F. Baumeister is a social psychologist and author whose research explores the self, motivation, and interpersonal life. His interests include identity, self-control, social rejection, the need to belong, and the ways people find meaning. His academic work has been recognized with the Association for Psychological Science’s William James Fellow Award.

With journalist John Tierney, Baumeister coauthored Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength. The book connects research on self-control with questions about goals and everyday behavior. Their collaboration also produced The Power of Bad, which examines how negative experiences can command attention and shape judgment.

Baumeister’s work asks how inner processes relate to the demands of living with other people. His books provide an accessible entry into questions about intentions, choices, and the social foundations of well-being. They offer material for reflecting on why people struggle with change and how personal aims interact with the need for connection.
