For example, consider this classic problem: A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
Most people instinctively answer 10¢. This feels right because System 1 jumps in and makes a quick, intuitive calculation. But if we slow down and engage System 2, we realize the answer is actually 5¢ (since if the ball costs 5¢, the bat, which is $1 more, costs $1.05, bringing the total to $1.10). This illustrates how System 1 is prone to making simple, but often incorrect, judgments.

Biases and Heuristics: The Faulty Tools of System 1

This shows how subtle cues in our environment can influence our actions in ways we don’t even realize.
11. Halo Effect
Our overall impression of a person influences how we judge specific traits. If someone is likable, for example, we’re more likely to believe they are intelligent, trustworthy, or generous, even if we have no evidence to support those judgments.
12. Confirmation Bias
We tend to seek out information that confirms what we already believe and ignore information that contradicts it. For instance, when asked if someone is friendly, we focus on evidence that supports friendliness, even if counterexamples are present.
13. Sunk Cost Fallacy
This bias leads us to continue a course of action because we’ve already invested time, money, or effort into it, even when it no longer makes sense to do so. Studies show that people are 40% more likely to persist in failing projects if they’ve made significant investments, rather than cutting their losses.
14. Status Quo Bias
We prefer things to stay the same, even when change could be beneficial. People are 50% more likely to choose the default option in a set of choices, even when alternatives are equally or more attractive.
15. Optimism Bias
People tend to believe they are less likely than others to experience negative events. For example, 90% of drivers think they are above-average drivers, which statistically cannot be true. This bias leads us to underestimate risks in our personal and professional lives.
16. Conjunction Fallacy
People often believe that more specific conditions are more likely than general ones. For example, in a famous experiment, 85% of participants wrongly believed that “Linda is a feminist bank teller” was more probable than “Linda is a bank teller,” even though it’s logically less likely.
Behavioral Economics and Decision-Making
In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman also explores how these biases affect our financial decisions, forming the basis of Prospect Theory, which he developed with Amos Tversky. Prospect Theory explains how people make choices under risk, particularly why we’re more sensitive to potential losses than to gains of the same size.
For instance, many people will buy insurance to protect against small, unlikely risks (like a house fire) but will underinvest in their health, which carries a much higher likelihood of long-term damage. This irrational behavior, driven by our fear of loss and poor grasp of probabilities, can lead to suboptimal financial and life choices.

For example, when evaluating a painful medical procedure, people’s memories of the experience are shaped more by how painful it was at its worst moment and how it ended than by the total duration of pain. This concept, known as the peak-end rule, reveals how the remembering self can distort our understanding of reality, with profound implications for how we pursue happiness and well-being.
